The four-cylinder engines that typified the approach by car-makers in this market segment were good enough for most, but not for all. In fact, so good was the original Mazda 6 that it gave the established class-leader, the Honda Accord Euro, a big fright in the sales charts.įor some would-be owners, however, the whole mid-sized sedan category was spoiled by the lack of a decent performance version.
